This jewellery box was commissioned by Formica UK as part of their product development and marketing program.

The box measured 13 inches long, 9 inches deep and 4 inches high. Automatically machined components of sycamore and Formica’s sheet material, ColorCore® were assembled together to form this jewellery box.(After this exercise, ColorCore® was promoted almost as if it was a semi-precious material and was then sold in 4-inch strips to distinguish it from the less expensive laminates which come in 8 ft x 4 ft sheets.)

The intricate detail was created by pre-programmed overhead routers carving the shapes ‘in situ’, and by stamping out strips of coloured laminate (just like washers out of steel sheet) to create the ornamental elements to the lid top.

The feet were turned on automatic lathes.

The interior is simply upholstered in velvet and conceals a lower compartment surmounted by a mirrored lid.
