Pelican & Scotts Delicatessen
Mark Lewis as Design Director Lewis & Horning 1983-87
Having refurbished Drones No 1 Pont Street, Belgravia, London for the Scotts Group as part of the ongoing program refurbishing all the restaurants in the group including Scotts, Mount Street we were asked to turn the retail unit next door into a delicatessen. A relatively simple task compared to the restaurants. The scheme devised included marble floor, cream coloured walls and a hand painted mural on the ceiling bulk heads for the graphic Pelican & Scotts part gold leaf for the Oyster Logo. Lengths of standard catering type stainless steel shelves bolted to the walls together with a bespoke section to carry the till and act as a display and dispenser for the chocolate bars and yummy biscuits you get from the continent. It used to be a butchers shop so the walk in fridge at the back was refurbished and reappointed with a new stainless steel vault door. The most epic task of the refurbishment was installing one of the largest refrigerated counter serveries money could buy. The counter despite coming in sections was too big to get through the shop door so the shop front was removed and refitted to allow for its installation. Neither Drones nor the deli exist today, each venue having undergone various incarnations since the eighties.
